I was doing a bit of studying on skin texture and how some of the artists out there create a convincing skin with clay. One of the tools they seem to use is a basic kind of rake. So, I thought I’d try to make some for testing with Nomad.
I definitely need some practice with them, but from what I’m seeing so far, they are pretty useful.
Here’s some random shapes that resemble an alien chicken wing I used to test it out on first.
Realized I never finished putting in the leg pieces, so I added some in. This is what it looks like when you have no real idea what it’s going to look like from the beginning and just keep throwing random pieces on…lol.
Looking great!
Very clean lines. No bubbles or wobbles at the edges.
That‘s the exact approach to all my sculpts. Doodle until an idea evolves.
Besides that i really struggle with realistic legs and feet. Never thought this is so hard. I guess for me it‘s monsters and mutants for a long time
@O-B That’s mostly from using the trim a lot on this one. After that last update to it, it really does great at getting some clean edges.
Doing anything with creatures makes it a lot easier. That probably should be what I try next as well is trying to do a realistic human foot. I know there’s a lot I have to learn still with that body part. It just takes everyone time to learn piece by piece.
@craxusmax and @Costorella_Stefano That would be an awesome idea. Would certainly ground a character a lot more when using a background. No clue what it would take stephomi to do to get something like that in, but that would be pretty cool to have as an option.
@CharlesLG Bipedal rodents need more representation in sci-fi.
@Danedesain That’s actually one area that I had been forgetting to do. This next one will be going more of that horror route.
@knacki I just need to try and start putting in all those extra little details like you had in that last one you just posted.
Originally, it was just going to be a basic zombie like thing (I’ll probably still do one eventually). With what I had in mind, it was going to need to be started from the skull. But, as I was making the skull, I had some other ideas that required putting in most of the facial muscles as well. Never tried that before, so I learned a lot about what’s in there. Not sure yet how much of it will be visible, but it will be good to have it in there.
The next part is going to take a little while though. Trying to put in a lot of the vein structure. Never realized how many there are and where they move through the areas of the head. It’s mostly just going to be from the front, so the skin should cover the rest when it gets put in.
Only added in the main vein for now. Changed some colors slightly and wanted to use the tone mapping to see how it might look. The rest is going to take a while to get in, so I’m going to take a break and grab a beer or two.
Ow noo!! Did you read my commen that i not like this alien things .is scary…
I more like you other modeling stuff
Hmm… maybe my english is bad…
I not mean to controling you arts prefer…
just not want misinterpret what i said …
Hope my commen Can be clear because englis is not my language
@knacki Yeah, it takes quite a bit of time currently. I think one possible feature that could assist with more realistic hair would be if the Move brush had an option to affect more than one object at a time when there’s a bunch of hairs in a simple merge. Unless it’s already in there and I’ve missed it somewhere which is always possible.
Just a quick dump of some alien doodles I’ve made recently.
Small update. Still didn’t get to the rear toes/spinneret or the rest of the mouth parts. Haven’t quite decided on having a thinner hair layer, but it could be interesting.
Thought I’d start on the new Nomad challenge over on the Discord area (which I still need to figure out). This time it’s a lizard man. Figured I’d try a slightly elongated body with a bit of an odd stance for bipedalism while shortening the snout to find some kind of middle ground between the two.
Just remeshed it, so now it’s time to start on some larger details. Still not entirely sure what I’m going to add or what it’s going to end up looking like.
