I have had some limited success disabling VSync, it seems to happen less often, but can still happen from time to time. The FPS on my system (just not in Nomad) tanks and I have to restart the computer.
Normally the log does not show anything of use, but today the lag started after using Quad Remesher and the log displayed much more info. Thought it might be of some use. On a related note, I’ve noticed in my logs that “Astc LDR” and “Astc HDR” are always set to “No”. Is that something that I need to worry about, or is it common for them to be set to “No”?
In my case with the problem, It had nothing to do with my graphics card and vsync and my xp pen or wacom tablets. It also shows on my Log that it was fine regardless of the lag and problem. In my case, forcing a force update on windows worked. Although your system in windows may say it is up to date, there are certain updates that are not installed or your pc may be missing some windows redistribution files. If I may suggest, either do a system restore to when your Nomad sculpt worked fine (if you had system restor enabled on PC). If that does not help, try installing missing windows redistribution files (most likely start 2010 or 2012 Visual C++ redistributions). That may also help other software problems in windows beside the lag/freeze in nomad. Worst but not the worst is do a system reset. It takes a white but there is an option to keep all your files and installed apps. It just reinstalles your operating system. I hope this helps.
Thanks for getting back! I doubt it’s C++ redistributions for me, I have 12 of them ranging from 2008-2022, most of them installed from various games through the years.
I just recently updated From Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Maybe a system reset might help, it’s been awhile since I did one.
Anyway, I just noticed that Windows 11 has an update history. Can you look at the updates you did around the time you fixed the issue and let me know what they are? I can look into them, see what they are, and if my system is missing any of them.
Thanks, but that was one of the first things I did. The only thing that seems to help so far is disabling VSync, doing that seems to make the problem occur much less.
What does your scene look like, in term of vram usage?
Because “it doesn’t happen on other app” isn’t pertinent if Nomad is the only app where you potentially fill vram.
I need to trigger the system lag again and hopefully get a good screenshot on my performance monitor right when it happens. For now these two screenshots show what performance is like during a couple of scenarios. One shows performance while radial sculpting (set to 12) on a 7 million poly mesh, so I expected the FPS to drop a bit (on a 144Hz monitor). The other shows performance when temporary lag hits and it drops to 5 FPS. When the system wide lag starts, it’s like the temporary lag values get applied to the whole PC (desktop and all) until a restart.
Did my .txt log I attached in the above post show anything helpful?
Don’t know how helpful this will be, but had Claude make this table based on 5 different performance screenshots. Baseline is when Idle in Nomad or doing simple stuff on simple models, which is why it shows a range. Like I said though, have yet to get a screenshot when the system lag starts, hopefully soon.
Nothing unusual in those numbers, it’s all at idle level or below.
In Nomad: Gesture menu → disable Use extra input samples.
Do you remember the LAST thing you did in Nomad before or while the lag starts? (camera moving? tool used?)
Also when the lag starts, close Nomad (or kill it from Task Manager), see if the lag stays, and open the task manager sorted by cpu, then gpu, then memory.
That way if something hogs the performance/memory we can see the culprit.
If I disable extra input samples can that negatively effect the sculpting process in any way? Regardless, I will give it a try soon.
It can vary what triggers the lag, I’ve had it happen when:
Simple sculpting on the default sphere
Alt-tabbing back into Nomad from another program
Once after running Quad Remesher set to 700k polys
Just editing settings in Nomad panels
Checking the Task Manager was one of the first things I did, everything looks normal. Just a guess, but I’m wondering if the GPU or CPU gets stuck in some kind of low power/performance state when the lag starts, and it stays in that state even after closing Nomad.
This could be Windows not switching to performance.
You can try this.
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics
Look for “Custom settings for applications”
If Nomad isn’t already on the list, choose Add desktop app, and navigate and select Nomad executable.
Once it’s added click the arrow to the right and set GPU preference to high performance.
If the Nomad is already open, you may need to close and reopen.
Could give it a try, I’ve been troubleshooting for weeks. Recently I set GPU and CPU to high performance globally, hoping it could help. Wouldn’t hurt to set it there too. I noticed some programs like Blender seem to create their own entry there.
If you’ve already done that, it’s not likely to work, as that would just set it local to Nomad.
Have you looked at background tasks?
While your CPU load and temps look fine in the image, the load is a bit high for idle.
I’ve got multiple programs open, a model with 8mil vertice and hovering around 11-15%.
Usually when I troubleshoot something like this on my own system, I disable all the startup apps, if it persists, I’ll start looking at services, but usually it’s some stupid background task that is the cause of most issues.

Thanks for the tips, I will have to try disabling some startup apps if the problem persists. Disabling VSync seems to be the thing that has helped the most so far, but I need some more sessions to be sure. Before disabling VSync the lag would start within 5-20 minutes, every single time.
Since disabling it I’ve tested six days so far. Four of those days I had 1-3 hour sessions with no problems. One day I got the usual system lag while sculpting. One day the lag started after a 700k Quad Remesher operation. The system lag occurrence has happened much less with VSync off, but I still haven’t completely solved it yet.

Does it only happen when you use your tablet in BT mode?
And does your mouse also connect via BT?
If so this could be the source of the problem, ranging from a driver issue, to a radio interference issue.
I’m having good luck with it lately, so hesitant to change anything yet. If the lag happens again, disabling extra samples was my next step. Do I lose any sculpting functionality or performance with it off?
