Well the key is compositing and understand a little about how light and shadows behave.
I am using a combined skillset from concept art and compositing principles.
Although this image here is not a prime example, for in compositing it is about sub-pixel accuracy.
In fact I want to do another version solely using compositing inside Blackmagic Fusion - which btw I teach on YouTube

I tried to get out some passes :
Ideally I would also create a mask pass but I couldn’t be bothered this time 
The z-depth is very important to fake fog.
The overpaint part is not something one can explain by mere words. It’s not really a technical process but mainly about the thought process and understanding how light and shadow behaves ( not that I do) .
If I continue doing these kind of images I might make a video series.

It is true that I forget that we can render by pass but still there is a sacred dose of talent that I do not have lol.
