Just download the beta on my Mac mini M4. I have to say, it’s awesome, it’s a great start. I was able to set up my mini dial just as I have it on the iPad. I’m excited!
Really?! Where it is?…..
k, get it
Started by installing v2.3.4 into my base M4 Mac mini. Noticed the only sculpting tool was the Clay Brush, so removed it and downloaded v2.3.3 for macOS.
Seeing that this version too only has Clay Brush, I tried dragging a custom brush from the iPad Pro into the desktop Nomad canvas. The tool palette remains unchanged with no new brush tool detected. I then tried cloning the Clay Brush, but the palette never reflects the change
At first, Project File palette is missing the Open icon, but after saving ANYTHING, the missing icons appear: Open, Add to Scene..
This leads to the next discovery that the save location is buried in a hidden spot. Digging into the Turntable palette, it’s hinted that the app and all project files are located at:
/Users/namehere/Library/Containers/com.hexanomad.nomad.mac/Data/Documents/Nomad Sculpt/
The available icon offers to change the “Nomad main folder” where it’ll re-locate the ENTIRE app structure… not what I was seeking, so left it alone. The lesson here is that Save/SaveAs effectively stores the sculpt somewhere internal to the app. To store the sculpt to a location where the file is accessible, use the Export function instead.
With these initial limitations detected, I attempted to put in some sculpting. Stroking the Clay Brush has a 90% success rate on my Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (PTH660). An occasional portion of those strokes is read as a navigation swipe making the sculpt pivot.
As there is no Smooth brush and holding the space key doesn’t conjure it up, I decide to hold off on further sculpting.
Using the Import function lets me bring a sculpt sitting in the My Documents folder. At least here, I can play with some other aspects like how Nomad would look maximized on this 49” curved display
Ultimately, v2.3.3 and v2.3.4 very much feel like solid proof-of-concept releases. Eagerly ooking forward to testing future betas. I’ll take it as a sign that it’s safe for a wider test if @stephomi carves out a new forum section for Desktop Nomad
Unfortunatly the use of my Wacom pen is totally buggy so I will wait for better updates.
by the way: If it would be possible to set a pen rotation as in the mobile version, that would be so great…
The art pen of Wacom should have a pen rotation sensivity…
thanks a lot @stephomi
I’ve been playing with it for about two weeks now, and I’ve found workarounds for most of what I’d typically use. The clay brush can work as a paint brush, if you turn intensity down to zero, and activate stroke painting, and it’ll stand in as a decent crease brush if you set the brush falloff to one of the more crease-like shapes. For smooth, I just do all of my rough clay buildup/carveout, and then use the smooth option in the operations menu. Repeaters all function normally so far, and tube is hidden in the ‘add primitive’ area of the scene menu.
Good workarounds.
The default path should be /Users/YourName/Documents/Nomad Sculpt/
And you can change the path, exactly like on iOS.
Wooo this is COOL! I’m trying to use it on my mac M1 with a Wacom Cintiq 22HD and it works but often the Wacom stylus tries to move the camera rather than add clay to the sphere. I’ve noticed if I simply select the sphere again it will sculpt but its not really useable yet for me. Can’t WAIT to use this on the desktop since my Mac has a lot more power than my iPad. Man, just being able to open a Nomad file to tweak something on the Mac before I 3d print it will be invaluable.
What about the Windows version?
Not sure if i can post link here, just google nomad beta
