Maxon's Forger update

I have Forger and would pay for an update, mainly to support the dev(s), 'cause I don’t expect it to be “too good”. Btw this is the worst teaser ever…

I find forger pretty clunky and no match for Nomad, however…. If you import an obj you are given the choice of two contexts, sculpting and texturing. The texturing context has some nice features. Full layering system with transfer modes, layers cam be diffuse, metalness etc. adjustment layers, layer masking and grouping. You can export all the layers as files. It also has uv generation. So in terms of fitting into a pipeline, it’s heading in the right direction.

I think that IF the upcoming 3D painting in Procreate may require UV mapped objects then maybe I would buy forger just for that. The interface is a bit clunky and ive heard that sculpting is slow compared to Nomad. Hopefully Procreate will allow vertex painting and the workflow between it & Nomad will be smooth :+1:t2:

Maybe I am dump, but I was not able to get working UVs in forger. It’s a very “simple” auto UV algorithm in my experience. Tending to crash.
It’s not a real solution for you, I am afraid. UVs on iPad? It remains a real problem, doesn’t it?

Since using vertex paint solutions on Nomad and in blender, I kinda like the freedom of not having to worry too much about mesh topology (I’m not an animator or game dev) and simply painting directly onto the surface or using PBR materials unmapped in apps like Keyshot. UVs are dead and I welcome our new colourful vertex overlords!! :joy:

That’s the right thinking. And if you use blender, take it for creating UV’s if you desperately want to paint your object in Procreate.
I am really curious what will happen when all Procreate kids will realise that the possibility to paint in Procreate won’t give them that much. I am quite sure most of them think they can create 3D stuff in new Procreate.
Let’s see if Savage is offering something for them as well……it is not a stroke stabiliser. They decide to think about it for another decade……

I foresee a bunch of “oh wow man, that painted sphere is amazing!” reactions to insta-kids posting their “innovative” procreate paint overs.

Yes, the UV’s out of Forger are garbage, but they work. I don’t see a real UV option for iPad yet and to do it right you couldn’t stop there. We need to both auto retopo (quad remesh or the remesher in zbrush) + manual retopo for animatable meshes + UV unwrap + baking vertex paint to texture. It’s actually a big ask.

Uv unwrapping is my number one request for Nomad or Forger. Any manual way to do this is better then not having it at all on the iPad. The auto version in Forger is not an option that work for anything I want to do.

I have been trying to figure out Sketch 3d. It’s an iPad app that has UV mapping of some sort, but it’s a bit difficult to figure out how it works. If someone know this app let me know.

I have Sketch 3D and have no idea how to use it. Not at all intuitive.

I agree. It’s very difficult to figure anything out in Sketch 3d, but it has features no other app has and when you know how to do something it’s not the bad. Low poly modeling is actually nice in it.

good to know, I’ll give it a try.

in fact if we look closely with the newly added decimation tool in nomad and procreate that happens we can say that they will be inseparable provided that there is an automatic uvs unfolding tool in one of the two, to my opinion in procreate.

I would be very surprised if there will be uv unwrapping, manual or automatic, in Procreate. Then again I’m very surprised already that they will do 3d painting.

Procreate won’t have UV unwrap (at least that’s what they told me, but they could have changed their mind, although I doubt so, it’s a bit far from their core product).

You can decimate in Nomad and unwrap in forger and then paint procreate.
I didn’t test the forger uv unwrap thoroughly so not sure how robust that is but it worked ok I tried (don’t expect UV master / substance unwrap quality level).

Very confusing indeed.

I downloaded Sketch 3d sometime ago and gave up trying. Downloaded it again yesterday and deleted it within a short time. It’s a shame if it’s a good app because the UI really lets it down.

Is the procreate 3D update out yet?, or you mean paint on a flat 2D texture from an unwrap?.

I recall seeing a teaser for 3D painting in procreate which I realllllly want to try

It’s not out yet but it will rely on texture painting.

So your model will require UVs (whether you paint directly on the model or on the unwrapped image itself, it’s more or less the same).
