Closing hole on mask extrac

I recently followed a tutorial on YouTube for making a ornate design but when I go to close the hole it closes all holes the darker bits it ment to be open

You have to seperate the mesh in hierarchy after closing the holes and delete the parts of that you don’t need. And don’t forget to split befor with the mask…

In my experience with something like this, using the trim function creates this issue. As Holger mentioned, you would need to separate the parts out then close holes.

I’m too lazy to do that though and found that, instead of using the trim function, using another object and either Boolean subtracting or subtracting via remeshing the two works well and doesn’t create this issue.
