Units need mathematic conversion afterward for metrics - they can be whatever you like as long as you do the appropriate calculation.

As John said, units are converted when taking them to another software. For the software I use, I have it set up for mm and it converts it right away.
You can scale by numbers if you’d like. As soon as a cube is imported, go to the transform button and you can see it’s scale = 1. Adjust this if you want a certain size.
