Many times I use layers to add details like shown in the video. I then try to erase portions to make it blend into the main shape. But the eraser tool doesn’t work nicely for hard surface stuff, unless I am missing something.
The layer-blend however would do a great job it seems. If we could use a layer-mask to blend the layer like shown in the video that would be indeed super nice.

If the slider works fine why needs something else?

I want to accomplish what I was trying with the erase layer tool. But it’s not clean.
The slider showcase was just to show that it looks like it could be cleaner using layer (-mask) to reverse/erase portions.
I think it’s a good idea, but would need some ideas how to make it work UX wise (edit layer mask mode which disables normal masking temporarily? special layer mask brush?)
