I’m wanting to start sculpting some characters, but I’m trying to figure out how to sculpt clothing items to add. If anyone has some good tips for how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it. ![]()
Quick’n’dirty way…
Start with a torso form
Paint a mask representing the targeted apparel shape. Here, I’m in a FRONT, non-perspective view using SelMask with a Lasso to get my mask. Note that Symmetry is ON.
In the SelMask tool options, set the desired thickness of the clothing. Here, I have 0.02. Further down on the Extract section, I have it on “Shell”. Although not too evident in this shot, the word “Extract” itself is a button. Press it….
The mask turns into an extracted article of clothing ready to be sculpted on.
Here’s ProcreateFX’s clothing tutorial - I found his method of keeping extracted clothes as simple as possible in order to sculpt w/the clay brush was very useful.
Thank you, that is going to be extremely helpful!

Hi,
For sculpting clothing on characters, it helps to start with the basic shape and focus on how the fabric would naturally sit and fold on the body. Try using references of real clothing to study wrinkles, seams, and how different materials behave.
A good approach is to block out the overall clothing form first, then add smaller details like folds, stitching, and textures once the shape looks right. Also, using separate layers or meshes for clothing can make adjustments much easier.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your character sculpting!
