Tip: depth/distance fog from heightmap

Making a landscape the other day, I started looking for a way to do distance fog to give a better sense of scale.

I started out trying multiple transparent/additive planes, but they definitely made a banded appearance on the ground/on objects.

Then I saw someone mention the heightmap feature and figured that could make something passable. Here’s how I did it: Depth fog in Nomad Sculpt (well, in post) - Album on Imgur

I suspect there’s a good way to use the heightmap for other things, too, like masking a desaturation layer. I’ll keep playing with it and see what I can come up with.

Yeah, using the heightmap as a mask for a saturation adjustment is cool:

I was doing an underwater render the other day, a simple depth fog feature in nomad’s post processing would be handy.
