Does anyone know if there is a way to import new brushes for applying paint? The brushes that I have, are just he ones that came with the app and seem primitive and do not apply the look that I wish my objects to have. If there is a way, what types file do they need to be?

You can import them, yes. Just do a simple google search and you should be able to find many. And you can make your own as well. I typically use an art app when making mine and make a square, black/white image of what I’m going for. JPG and PNG work as well as other formats. I’ve attached an example. 
Is there a way to remove custom brushes after you have added them?
Never mind. Found it under brush options on the tool bar where you can adjust the brush settings.
