Nudge Tool - keep the shape/form but slide the vertices where they are needed

If you deform a mesh stretching appears.

It would be nice if we could slide the vertices to the stretched mesh parts BUT keep the form/shape of the mesh.

Maybe with 0% … only the vertices slide …

Sounds like you’re describing the relax tool

Relax doesn’t keep the shape and it doesn’t slide the vertices - relax tries somehow to even out the topology but NOT to slide vertices to the stretched areas…

With Nudge you can slide the vertices BUT you loose detail - so it would be nice if there was a option to keep the shape/volume/details AND only slide the vertices…

I see what your saying now, usually I would either use dynamic topology or remesh especially with that amount of deformation. Vertex sliding is usually more reserved to poly and box modeling for sub-d workflows. So I’m definitely curious about your use and or workflow.

I need it for the new VDM plane primitive - you can’t use for the plane remesh etc. you have to slide the vertices if you need more polycount in the stretched areas - and also slide the UV…

AH yes, I haven’t played with the VDM creation yet, but you don’t have to sculpt from a plane, from what I’ve seen in a video someone just posted.

If you do want to do it from the plane, in Blender we’ll pinch the area first, to bring more detail to the center, for horns and such.

This is Matt’s reproject video - doesn’t work well

BUT you need to BAKE the VDM from the plane because of the UV… in fact you need your sculpt on the plane mesh with the square UV… to be able to bake it.

Yeah, I was either thinking of another software or misremembering it as using 2 objects, with the plane being the projection normal, and the second mesh being the VDM data, or maybe it was a fevered dream  my appologies.
Though I bet we could get a better plane by making it out of something else.
Give me a little time to test this in Nomad.

Didn’t work, I can bake a cube, but not a cone, which would allow for a high number of rings for some crazy deformation.
I’m gonna keep messing around with it, and see if I can find a way to get it working, maybe do it with a cube or something.

Over the last days I baked about 200 VDMs - scales / eyes / noses etc. - no problem with nomad BUT I don’t get it to bake things like this Horn :joy:

I tried EVERYTHING - reproject - nudge vertices etc. 100 workflows BUT nothing works :joy:

That‘s why I need to slide the vertices …

Okay, so here’s what is working for me atm, I create a 1k VDM with masking and all.
I then reverse the subdivide down to about 300 for shaping, and use the gizmo to pull the geometry to the center.
Pulling and sculpting the shape, and using the nudge tool when geometry gets too thin in an area.
Seems to be working, but it’s getting late, so I’ll have to play with it more tomorrow.

That’s the point why I requested a nudge option without deforming the mesh and loosing detail
