Mask‑Front option produces effect on the back face

The mask feature works really well. However, I’ve run into an issue. When using the Sel Mask tool with the Front option selected, my brush selection creates a mask on the back face instead.
I have tried saving and restarting the app, as well as flipping normals, but none of these steps fixed the problem.
