This a real issue for me.
When you work on one layer for longer time, it can happen by mistake that you switch to another or to base. Happens quite often to me and is destroying the work. A layer lock option could make these mistakes happen less often.

Bringing this back from the dead as I’ve also found I need this feature a lot.
Would be very useful to lock a layer so that you cant accidentally sculpt or paint on it.

I would also really like this feature. It would be really useful because I constantly select other objects when I am trying to paint or sculpt and end up making changes to the wrong one. I know we can hide items, but locking them would be really useful.
You may be confusing layers with objects. You can currently lock an object so you don’t select others, meaning your sculpting or painting only happens on the locked object.
Locking layers would mean that you don’t accidentally work on certain layers within an object.
