I Remember when ... Organic modeling in 1997

Nomad Sculpt is a breath of fresh air.

I participated in beta testing a sculpting app, first for the Amiga, then DOS, then Windows (when it was released on the PC. It was called, simply, “Organica” by a company called “Impulse”. Using a new concept called “Meta Balls” (or “blobbies”) for object creation, presenting the sculptor with a couple dozen primitives that could be stretched, sized, bent, twisted and tapered. (sound familiar). The interface was clean and sensible, at a time when there were no interface standards. Here is a screen grab of a model I presented to the developers, which they chose to use on the splash screen.

If it were possible, in some future build of Nomad, to be able to use a quad-view (x,y,and z orthographic with a perspective window). I was very comfortable in that environment, having come from CADD (in the 1980s-1990s)

I just sold my last 2 Amigas 2 1200’s. I had 10 of them at one point. Loved those machines. I was doing My first animations with Deluxe Paint 2-5. I had Turbo Silver, Caligari, and Lightwave and a Video toaster.

WOAH! Good days. I couldn’t afford a render farm, Started with a 1000, upgraded to the 2000. Used the original Silver … then to Turbo Silver … then Imagine, Lightwave (still use the pc version for silly things like home improvement walk-throughs, and furniture design) Deluxe Paint was my fave. Just wasn’t in a position to go super-pro with it. Did page layout with PageMaker for full page ads in a couple computer magazines. Had to deal with sending layouts to the publisher over 300 baud … painfull!

I thought of another 3 D animation program, I got pretty good with Animation Master by Hash. I am a traditional Artist started drawing Marvel comics at 12 , actually went to Marvel with a portfolio at 23 years old. They told me my drawing skills and Anatomy knowledge was as good as some of the guys working already. But when he started explaining what the job entailed 22 pages a month. I thought to myself I’ll just go the Frazetta route and book and Album cover Art. But I built a bunch of Marvel characters. I am working on a Spiderman battle on the old NY style buildings. I paint Wildlife and Landscapes now full-time retired from my Construction Biz. billlangisfineart.com

Very impressive work on you site, Sir!

About 1997 I dropped digital art for pushing polymer clay. The Owner of impulse called me up about some of my 3D work in their 3D modeling app. In the conversation, he suggested checking out the “Gremlins in the Garage” site. It was a hobby site for people doing sculpting, and casting of resin model kits of popular movie monsters and characters, super heroes, fantasy and celebrities. I immediately took up the habit. After playing with the medium, and learning some ins and outs of the hobby, and developing a small skill-set, I began taking on commissions for prototypes for resin figure kits.

Recently, I’ve rekindled my interest in digital sculpting, even though I’m seeing a disheartening surge in AI taking over the industry. Several of my friends have become unemployed from studios who have adopted AI generation for their product. The “heart” of the art is becoming a ghost of the past.

I think, now, in my retirement, I am only in it for the fun, personal development and challenge.
