Can you lose your creativity when trying out a new app?

Maybe those who already got comfortable using a different 3D program for years could feel “weird” when trying out Nomad Sculpt for the first time. It’s not because Nomad Sculpt is bad or anything. It’s because they already got used to the other app and couldn’t transfer to a new app easily.

I wonder if it could happen to me too as I’m already super comfortable with Nomad Sculpt. Is it possible for me to face challenges and uncomfortable if I ever try out another 3D app?

Yep, I’ve often said the second 3d app can often appear to be harder to learn than the first. My take is that learning 3d isn’t intuitive, its 3d but on a 2d screen, it takes your brain a while to adjust to this new paradigm.

Once you get it, then you’re asked for whatever reason to learn another app, people generally instinctively recoil. They remember how much effort it was to learn the first app, now you’re expected to do it all again?

Worse, the first few days, all your fears are realized; all the buttons are in the wrong place, the camera is backwards, none of the workflow makes sense, you know you could get this done way faster in the original app, this is all a waste of time. If you look around there’s always a vocal group of people who refused to give up modo, or xsi, or 3dmax, whatever their first app was, they’ve stayed there.

But stick with it. After the first few days you’ll have a ‘click’ moment, and you start to see analogies to the first app. In the long run, the second app will take you less time than the first to learn. Then the 3rd app will have less of a resistance curve, and will be faster to learn again. Then the 4th. then the 5th…

I’m on about app 20 or 30, new software doesn’t bother me any more. Generally the conversation goes ‘we need you to learn x’, I ask 'sure, you’ll pay me right", they say ‘yes’, I say ‘fine’.

If anything the more software you learn, the more creative you get; you can genuinely pick the best tool for the job, vs falling into the cliche of ‘if you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail’.

This is totally possible and has happened to me many times when switching software. One funny thing though is that even though I’ve been using zbrush for almost 20 years, Nomad feels more natural for me to use than Zbrush for ipad does. I think the sculpting experience is much better and with the exception of a few nice brushes and tools like zspheres, Nomad feels better designed and more intuitive to use.
