I’ve been trying some new tools out that I hadn’t figured out the purpose for, and I’ve seen this for a while, but don’t know what it does. I’ve tried looking it up, but I wasn’t able to find anything. Could someone please explain its function/purpose to me? I’d greatly appreciate it. 
It keeps the gizmo aligned with world space. if you rotate object the the gizmo arrows will keep their position but will throw your symmetry off so be careful
