Using Path and also Curve guides

I am using the curve as well as the path tool.

However instead of being able to trace a singular line it defaults to making a closed path as soon as I begin to draw out the curve.
I want to be able to trace a single undulating line, but I can’t because the tool defaults to a loop as soon as I start using it.

There is a pop up menu that has “closed” selected. Unselect closed and you should be good to go.
