Design the model with Planes, flat out like an origami foldout? Origami might be your best inspirational avenue of research to go down for designing a model with this outcome in mind. I literally am just, using logic here and throwing this out on a whim.

Import your model into Pepakura. It will flatten it for you and create all you fold & cut lines.
