Expanded usability with the curve repeater tool

Love the tube tool and what it can do with profiles. However the curve repeater seems somewhat limited. For example, I can see that it is useful if its a smaller object placed along a curve that can be manipulated rather well, such as a series of circles. However, when it comes to braids for example, I only see two ways to really do this. One is the traditional way where you take three tubes and make a figure eight. The other is editing the profile of one tube so that when it twists, you get more a braid effect. So far the most appealing is still using the 3 tube/figure 8 method, but the feature I would request is something that 3D Coat has and if not mistaken Zbrush has (or something similair) which is being able to select a start, middle, end, and make the object (my three tube braid I just made) a custom curve profile that adjusts along a path fluently.
